Christ in the Proverbs: Proverbs 19:14

Proverbs 19:14
House and wealth are inherited from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
In Hebrew parallelism there is generally an escalation that occurs in the second line. This is clearly evident in this proverb. Houses and wealth are good gifts that often come via inheritance from parents. But far greater than houses and wealth is a prudent and wise wife. This is a greater blessing that only the Lord can give.
The world's values do not coincide with the Lord's values. The Lord values wisdom far above earthly riches. A prudent and wise wife is far more valuable than the kind of house we live in or how much money we have.
Note also the kind of wife young men should seek. The supreme attribute to be sought is not physical beauty, but wisdom. Wisdom gives an inward beauty that pleases the Lord, who looks not on the outward appearance, but the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Thus, the Lord counsels women: "Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious (1 Peter 3:3-4).
But this counsel to wives, is also counsel to Christ's church, which is his bride. As the Lord's people, we are not to spend our lives in pursuit of wealth. The love of money is the root of many evils (1 Timothy 6:10). Instead we are to seek spiritual riches that are found in Christ.
Chief among these spiritual riches is a wise and understanding heart that knows the Father and the Son he sent (John 17:3), for this is true life. Notice how our God has always desired a wise and understanding people:
"See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?" (Deuteronomy 4:5-7)
Christian, are you pursuing a wise and understanding heart that pleases your heavenly Husband, Jesus Christ? Do you know his Word? Do you spend time each day listening to him? Do you seek him in prayer? Wisdom, like a wise wife, is a gift that only the Lord can give. Are you asking for and seeking this good gift that pleases your Lord?
