Hymn Teaching Us About the Providence of God

What Do You Understand by the Providence of God?

To the tune KLOKJE KLINKT ( Based on Lord’s Day 10 of the Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 27 and 28 (related Westminster Shorter Catechism Q&A 11). Words: Bill Weber, 2010.

v. 1
What do you understand
by the providence of God?
Providence is the pow’r
by which God upholds all things.

v. 2
Providence also means
that my God rules over all.
All things come, not by chance,
but through God’s most gracious hand.

v. 3
Leaf and blade, rain and drought,
food and drink, and sick and well,
poverty, and great wealth,
all come by the Father’s hand.

v. 4
How are you bless’d to know
that God rules and sustains all?
It is good, I am blessed
knowing God works for my good.

v. 5
I praise God for His pow’r.
I thank Him when things go well.
But if things, go ‘gainst me,
I am patient in His love.

v. 6
Praise to Christ, God’s dear Son.
Through Him I am God’s dear child.
He will watch over me.
In His love I’ll always be.

Lord's Day 10
Q & A 27
Q. What do you understand
by the providence of God?

A. Providence is
the almighty and ever present power of God^1
by which he upholds, as with his hand,
and earth
and all creatures,^2
and so rules them that
leaf and blade,
rain and drought,
fruitful and lean years,
food and drink,
health and sickness,
prosperity and poverty—^3
all things, in fact, come to us
not by chance^4
but from his fatherly hand.^5

Q & A 28
Q. How does the knowledge
of God's creation and providence
help us?

A. We can be patient when things go against us,^1
thankful when things go well,^2
and for the future we can have
good confidence in our faithful God and Father
that nothing will separate us from his love.^3
All creatures are so completely in his hand
that without his will
they can neither move nor be moved.^4
